Weddings can get complicated, especially when there’s a cast of characters involved along the way. One of those characters is the Best Man, whose main job is to be there to support your husband-to-be, stay in charge of the other groomsmen, and of course, deliver a memorable (for only good reasons) toast at the wedding reception.

But you might find, as the wedding planning is taking place and the pre-wedding events are happening left and right, that the Best Man is driving you crazy. Perhaps he is stressing you out with his drinking habits, which leave you feeling embarrassed after every pre-wedding event, or maybe he’s starting to step in and influence the decisions you make about what you should have on your wedding day. Maybe he’s negatively influencing your groom, who all of a sudden is behaving weird and making you wonder if there’s something more going on.

Either way, here are five essential tips to follow when you are starting to feel extra stressed out by your man’s Best Man before your wedding day.

  1. Keep Him Busy

If you’re dealing with a Best Man who seems to want to overstep the decisions you are making or is constantly calling or emailing you with questions, find a way to keep him busy. Perhaps that’s by putting him in charge of something you know he’ll enjoy doing (so he will do it right) or by asking him to handle some wedding tasks, so that he’ll have something to focus on.

  1. Have a Chat

The best way to find out what’s going on with the person who is supposed to be your partner’s number one friend is to have a direct chat with him. Ask to meet him for dinner or coffee and see what’s going on. Perhaps he has things going on in his personal life that’s making him extra tense and he’s offloading that stress onto you and your wedding. It could also just be that he has no idea that what he’s doing, or not doing, is making you stressed out. The last thing you want on your wedding day is to feel extra stressed or tense because of one person. Having a conversation with the person who is currently making you overwhelmed could help greatly.

  1. Ask Your Groom to Intervene

If anyone knows the Best Man best, it’s your groom. He might not be aware of how his BFF’s actions are making you feel a certain way, so first fill him in. Let him know what’s been happening and how it’s made you react. Ask him to intervene, whether it’s with a chat or just having your back when future situations arise.

  1. Let Your Bridal Party Takeover

If you are worried that the Best Man might get out of control on your wedding day, ask your bridal party to keep an eye on this person so that they can monitor anything going on and keep him in line.

  1. Ignore Him as Much As You Can

It’s your wedding, so try to stay in control of who is making you feel a certain way. If one person Is getting you extra stressed or making you wish your wedding was just over and done with, see how you can temporarily avoid them.
